That's not a failure of the generation and distribution capacity, it's a failure of the capacity market auction system. National Grid is obliged to ensure that it doesn't over-purchase generation, as it would mean that consumers get charged more than they need to. If the market gets it wrong, then there can be short periods of under-generation.

Nearly all power outages to domestic customers are not as a result of generation inadequacy, they are caused by failures in the Distribution Networks.

National Grid are basing their planning on all vehicles being EV by 2040, and they reckon we'll need a 30% in capacity over and above today's generation capability, hardly an insurmountable target, especially given the proliferation os solar capacity.
