Creality Ender 3 printers seem to be quite popular at the moment, you can get them for less than £250 so a much easier entry point than Ultimaker kit. I'd still recommend using Ultimaker Cura as your slicer software though, it's free and very efficient at converting drawings to gcode. I use TurboCAD for doing the 3D modelling but that's just because it's what I'm familiar with, a lot of people use Fusion360 which has a free version available.

Found a supplier called Technology Outlet fairly close to me with a showroom so will go and have a talk to them about the Creality Ender range.

I'm surprised how cheap it is considering it's capability but I'm sure I'm missing something and there will be shortcomings somewhere.

What are the key questions to ask and compare?

If something looks too good to be true, etc, etc.
