I read that the Australian government had thousand and thousands of mask stock piled for such an epidemic but due to the bushfires and such bad smoke in January decided to distribute them on the basis it should be to stock pile some again before an epidemic comes. Given how bad the smoke was I think they did the right thing at the time but it seems bizarre that such an epidemic would occur so soon after the masks were released for bushfire smoke.
