Got the car back on the road yesterday. A huge thank you to Arwyn Williams who connected me with the shifter I needed as the original one came loose in my hand. Very different feel that will take a little getting used to, but it feels so much more solid than the old one.
BTW, post from UK to US took just under 3 weeks.
Of course, we get back home from our trip out to find that the water pump is leaking, and a noise from the left front on hard right turn leaves me to believe I may have a wheel bearing issue.
Never a full moment!

Thanks Paul for the kind words.
I'll explain a little about the gear shifter:
It's one that I modified from an aftermarket competition part about 18 months ago when I had a similar problem to Paul's.
The part came from either Rix Engineering or Matt Lewis Racing, can't remember which!
Instead of various plastic washers and plastic threaded parts there is a screwed housing containing a spherical bearing. There are two spanner flats to enable the housing to be tightened onto the gearbox
As supplied it's far too long. So I shortened it in the lathe and threaded the top part Its also too thin and would look odd sticking though the gaiter.
So I made up a top frollm a scrap piece of 1" stainless bar which was then tapped to match the thread I'd cut previously. I then cross drilled it and tapped it for locking screws and also cut a thread for the gear knob.(This is the part you can see sticking through the gaiter in Paul's photo.
I heated the top with an oxy torch and bent it over.
A quick polish with some emery tape to get rid of the tooling marks and then a buff of the polishing wheel.
Did 2000 miles with no issues and it became surplus when I changed to a 5 speed box in Feb this year
