The route I had looked at went Tangier-Chefchaouen-Fes-Errachilda-Mezouga-Dades Gorges-Ait Benhaddou-Taroudant-Marrakesh-Rabat-Tangiers. This was my initial attempt stopping overnight at or near those locations.

Hello Roger! That's 90% our idea.
Our Only difference is the crossing of the Atlas Mountains from Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakesh, instead of driving Southern to Taroudant.
We personally prefer to stay one more day in Marrakech and do a back-and-forth daily trip to Essaouira rather than Taroudant. Essaouira is an amazing old Portuguese city / fortress just by the Atlantic. Beautiful Much more than Taroudant IMHO.
Something I also like from your trip is that you choose not to stop at Casablanca! People think about Casablanca because of the movie and believe it's a romantic decadent city. And it's hell-on-earth and even more with an air cooled 3 Wheeler. Traffic jams, people driving like crazy and absolutely nothing special to see nor visit. Just the super modern Moroccan business city and its craziness: that's Casablanca. To be avoided.
