The Mini club tool includes a tapered section to lead the circlip onto the boss. , at the beginning the gap between tool and tapered section is at its largest. I had the problem of the circlip digging into the tapered section and trying to fold up into the tool. I managed to push the circlip half way down the taper, so the gap was smaller, and then all went well. In retrospect I thought that some lubricant on the tapered section may have prevented that happening. I do now have the 'MG club' version but haven't had to use it yet.
