Which implies its not the Centa? ie the starter torque passes through to the engine... perhaps the clutch has gone?

No the starter torque is not passing through the engine, the Centa is between the engine and starter motor, when the Centa fails the engine is decoupled from everything. The symptoms are that the starter motor is driving through the clutch to the gearbox and rear wheel when in gear and spins only the flywheel and clutch when in neutral. See diagrams in earlier post for the configuration.
