There have been a number of days this year when wind and solar together met the UK's energy needs.
Add in some nuclear and efficient energy storage and fossil fuel use will end.
Storage is the big question, but there are some interesting ideas about. Using excess power to compress air to liquid, and then releasing the potential energy to generate power is one option, along with pump water storage and mega capacitors.
Interestingly, Switzerland buys excess nuclear produced energy in the night from France and uses it to pump water unto alpine lakes, which in the day release water to produce power.
All of this is showing that a green carbon free future is possible.

"Space" heating, homes and businesses, is the next challenge. Much is natural gas fuelled, but hydrogen can replace natural gas. Making hydrogen isn't that efficient, but if there is sufficient green electricity available, why not?
