One of the most memorable experiences I have had (the others I won't go into) was during our yearly Arctic Warfare training within the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. We used to get airlifted into our areas of operation just before Christmas each year and return 3 months later, it could be quite isolating but the Northern Lights were always spectacular to watch. At first it was quite a surreal and spooky experience as the display built up and then took over the sky accompanied with complete silence, made the freezing night watch a little more acceptable.
