As I checked this thread one other thing came to mind...

A faulty oil filter:

I had a Fram (US brand of oil filter) breakdown, releasing the paper fiber into the oil stream. The paper filiment choked the screen on the oil pick-up. The only way to check is to open the oil pan...Or if you know somebody with a borescope, one could peek up through the oil drain hole.

If you have an oil cooler mounted, I would also suggest that you totally remove it and flush out, cleaning out all the sludge that may have accumulated in it over the years.
