They fill a niche market populated by people with badge desire and are bling magnets.
The idea of off road might add to the appeal to these “look at me’s” but seriously, no ground clearance? I bet they would would struggle with the urban potholes/speed bumps that require off road capabilities.
An EV off roader? Bloody hell, imagine the range anxiety when out in that in the wilds of Dartmoor, Brecon Beacons, local fete/school sports and parked in a field.
I do get puzzled at the way off road versions of standard models get built. I can understand a 4x4 to get traction but true off road? I even think hybrids are a marketing option to entice sales as they seem a weight added version with less than efficient EV capability and price (profit) hike. I had one in Jan as a courtesy car. Nice car but the transition between EV and petrol was not clear. Also the unnecessary tech/bling. I only did a low mileage though so no real trip along the learning curve. I’d go EV but initial buying cost is too high for the size we want. A Kia Niro is in my sights but not at the cost.
Have a look at the Fiat Panda Cross. They also do a mild hybrid.
