They can only be shot specifically to protect other wild bird species .... the old general licences don't apply and the current one has that limitation .... certainly up North here they're not numerous enough to pose a risk to other bird populations so a shooter would be hard pressed to justify shooting one .... the picture may be different down South where they're more numerous.
