The problem with the original air filter is the single small bore inlet to the "cannister" . It is great for developing torque for 2 to 3 ton SUVs but it does restrict the ability of the engine to rev quickly , which is much more important in a sports car.

A simple cone type filter like K&N , JR , or other are fine , just make sure that you clean and oil them annually (K&N sell a cleaning and re-lubing kit) The other alternative is a "foam" type , these tend to be favoured by the racers, and are cleaned simply by washing in water plus detergent.

I know I had to make a couple of modifications to the "stub" where it attaches to the air mass sensor , so the new filter would fit , but this was not difficult.

The other task you might like to consider is support , the canister is supported in 2 places , removing it and fitting a new filter without support can lead to vibration, mine is mounted on a small bracket which utilises the holes already drilled in the bulkhead for the canister mounting nearest to the air mass sensor.
