AH So it is not a protection for the sump? It certainly does vastly multiply the lowest (problem) ground clearance point by 50-100 times and does so ahead of the sump (mostly) Is that considered a good thing?!!!

Surely you understand how a snowplough works. The clue is the shape. Small obstacles would be brushed sideways avoiding the sump. I'm pretty sure 99.99% of our posters would understand that. The other .01% is you.
In fact, I now have a snowplow for the house I am building. But Nick, if the intent of Dave was to sweep debris away from the sump, would not have the business end of brushes worked better without presenting a much greater risk to the sump by its presence?
But it doesn't...have another look at the pictures but keep both eyes open this time. It sits ahead of, not underneath the sump.
Sorry Nick. I am not seeing anything new. The low clearance area has be expanded hugely and any front impact will push the assembly into the sump (shrug) or damage the all-important flange it is attached to. Can you help me with the indicated points on the images?
The regulations concerning how soft the front of a vehicle must be are all about cars driving into pedestrians. Not too many drivers, however inebriated they might be, reverse at 30mph into walkers..
But how many pedestrians, inebriated or not, fly upwards and TOWARDS the car hitting them and then down onto the bonnet, and get damaged by the engine hidden underneath? But as I said, kind man, I do not argue the logic of any governments regs or presume anything copied or designed by the Factory is perfect. I leave that to others.
By the way. Have you ever looked at the Alfa (iffy) solution for the same problem. Below.

BTW, for fun, do an image google on "engine skid plates" or "sump skid plates" and count how many you find place in front of either.
They make EVERY effort to leave the air flow dynamics of the engine bay undisturbed. I applaud that. They also cover the entire sump and leave space between the skid plate (aka guard) and the sump. Roadsters don't have that option.
Your picture of the carb v8 with the hammered box could be of my car which I owned for several years, a 1978 plus 8.
