Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert
30th Sep 2021
British Geological Survey

A coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with a long-lasting solar flare was observed leaving the Sun on the 28th of September. The Earth-directed parts of this CME are predicted to arrive late afternoon on the 30th September.

Enhanced geomagnetic activity is expected on impact, with STORM conditions likely, depending on the configuration of the magnetic field embedded in the CME.

Assuming clear dark skies, and that the geomagnetic field is suitably disturbed, there is an increased chance of seeing the aurora. In the UK, those in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland may have the best opportunities.
