On later cars with camber adjustment and necessary rounded end kingpins I would always fit the two shaped washers (well greased) last, directly under the top nut. The action of tightening the nut will allow the two washers to slide against each other to accurately compensate for kingpin angle. Note it's been known for such washers to explode if this is not allowed to happen!

My car was spec'd with BRB's from factory new (and fitted as above) but if retro fitting and in event of outer end not lying against or close to chassis during test fit, I would simply bend one or both flattened ends to suit. Sorry but fitting washers or spacers is a bodge. The thickness of a standard washer gap can be ignored. More important it's bolted directly to chassis.
