You don't mention what voltage is/was provided to instruments Dave. Should be 10 volts WRT instrument ground. Sensor grounding is most important as well particularly in the case of fuel gauge circuit. Recommend solid state regulator BTW. Richard, Many thanks for the recommended link, I was not aware of these solid state versions, I feel another preventative modification coming on!
