As someone who was given a £4,000,000 budget to address Y2K issues, the problems and risks were hugely overidentified and hyped up by overpaid consultants. Once the issue with the main systems were addressed which in most cases was a relatively straightforward process the rest of the "problems"; embedded systems, telecoms, office system, PC's et al (largely) simply did not exist.

I do not recall the media trumpeting as "see", but my response to "Bloody hell, those people did a good job, didn't they?" would have been Elephant powder.
