Good spot Graham, it seems to be a standard thing over here on any car worth north of 35k.
Thanks for the replies, I do remove the steering wheel but still need to tick that immobiliser box. Richard, I'm not electrically minded enough to attempt it so will have a look around.

I removed the boot liner to check the belt clearance as suggested by Chris, and there is about 4mm clearance between belt and tyre, and no evidence of rubbing on the tyre. The belt sits nicely in the centre of the wheel sprocket, is tight (just a little twist), and no sign of belt wear.
It sits at the L/H edge of the sprocket (?) attached to the bevel box, up against what looks like a stop or guard. Is that ok and could it cause the chuffing noise on overrun.
