- gently lever out the leather pad* which has (as Simon says) one / a couple of 'fir tree' fixing(s).

*N.B. put some masking tape on the metal and use a plastic/nylon lever if possible.

The engine turned metal, bottom half is then simply fixed with a couple of (wood ?!) screws as, I recall.
