At first I made the plates from 3mm thick aluminium thinking that that would add strength, but realised that the surface of the rail isn't flat, but profiled (or maybe uneven is a better word), so I used 1mm steel so it will take the shape of the surface when all tightened up. The original fixing screws are 6mm, I used 5mm for the screws that fix the plate to the rear part of the rail so as not to weaken the rail too much.
So I can always supply a drawing/template as I have a set in aluminium
Decided to buy a stapler which uses 140 staples (10mm flat crown) to fit the cloth trim back in place. and unibond repair extreme power glue to stick the rubber back to the rail
