I grew up with the Vulcan Bombers, they were assembled at Woodford Aerodrome and I lived at the end of the runway in Poynton amazing sight and sound as they took off and did their first test flights, broke a few windows. Early Sunday mornings they used to close the Poynton to Woodford road on which we lived as they brought the fuselage and wings on transporters under Police escort to the aerodrome. They had special rigs that would raise the fuselage on the transporter to get over the railway bridge in Poynton, quite a procedure that took at least an hour. All us young lads would gather and watch whilst annoying the local Bobby.

Thank you for sharing that Bruce what an amazing story and convoluted transportation job.
I’ll never forget seeing / hearing and feeling the ground shaking at Coltishall one year when one of the white Vulcans stuck full reheat on and stood it on it’s tail and just vanished into the cloud base leaving us all stunned and nearly deaf. The only other time I have been as stunned when we had similar down here above the Dart with a Typhoon and the noise level was similar and a lot of the boaters were moaning, probably because they couldn’t hear their Seagull chuffing away.

We got our Spitfire fly past at 1835hrs well worth the wait.
