... the new dealer *couldn't give me a trade in valuation* on a 2017 Aero 8, even after I'd explained what an Aero 8 is - which does indicate their interest in current model cars.

... iirc at the time of the buyout there was talk of much reduced production times for CX cars, which would allow volume to double. I guess that hasn't happened yet, as they've had to build so many CX cars twice :-(

... BMW now have so many hybrid powertrain options I'd be amazed if there wasn't a hybrid CX chassis car running around.
If you repeated the Aero approach in 2000 - making it the differently-styled, forward looking model, priced relatively high & in low volume, then logically the first hybrid would be an Aero.
& if it were me, to really distinguish it from the CX trad style, I'd update & reinvent the AeroMax/Coupe concept, with hybrid power.
