In the GDI installation the engine is vertical as opposed to the 10 deg slant that it's in in the Mx5. This means that the gearbox is on a slant so that the level plug is lower than it should be. In order to get 2 lt into the box you have to pick the front of the car up (quite a lot!). There is also the remote gear lever mounting, if your car has one? This has a small amount of oil in it. This is also explained in the link.

See here there is also a part2. http://www.mogmag.co.uk/rumblings-from-a-mazda-box-part-1/

Edit: I use a Mahle OC1063 oil filter in my GDI.
From looking at the gear ratios given in my handbook it refers to the Ford gearbox.

Changed my gearbox oil today, having done almost 25k miles since last change. It looked a pretty good colour.
Having drained it with the car on a level surface, I found that by running the n/s wheels up onto a couple of lengths of 6x2, a bit more came out.
Being aware of the canted gearbox, when refilling, I jacked up the front on the middle of the cross frame as far as my jack would go and that enabled my axle stands set at 13 inches high to go under. The box then took just about all of 2 litres, with just a small bit running back out. Replaced level plug and then let the car back down to level.
Hope this is useful to others.
