So I shortened the rod a touch (at first too much and then couldn't engage the clutch!) and it helped a tad - but that really mainly moved the clutch release point further down during pedal push, though it moved the clutch pedal forward a little bit.

@BuyBritish is absolutely correct...the entire clutch linkage is very badly worn, with the holes the clevis pins go though quite out of round on the rod ends, so there's lots of slop in the system. Will probably have to replace the entire linkage to fix this eventually methinks...
