Lets face it, back in the day, all we had was Matchbox, Dinky, Corgi, and Spot-on. There are some very interesting stories on You Tube about all this. Considering we were not well off, I did Ok. Dinkies were primitive in my day, no windows or interiors, but Corgi came along and upped the game. Spot-on were impressive at the time but looking at them now, they were crude. The commercials were amazing but I never came close apart from a luxury coach.
I did also have a small Tri-ang railway. Playcraft was basement bin quality. Hornby Dublo 3 rail was what the rich kids had.
But it was Airfix kits which filled my early years. Mostly aircraft, but a few warships and galleons. The small stuff was 2/6d by then. The big stuff 7/6d. I recall the Sunderland flying boat was 10/6d. I don't think I built to a very good standard with hindsight, but I had a fantastic time building.
