A wonderful trip. Regarding potholes, come to North Rhine-Westphalia, we now have in some regions as many potholes as we do unpunctual trains. In Belgium, potholes may have some charm, but in Germany they are an unmistakable symptom of the state of the entire country.
Really sorry to read that as when we lived there in the mid seventies we thought the infrastructure was very good, At the time in UK we had a long line of Labour governmental decline and things were grim, so we can look forward to more of the same
