Road debris and potholes will puncture any tyre, new or not. In fact low profile tyres are worse on potholes because it can damage the rim.
Once I had screws penetrate both rear tyres on our previous Polo. One was a crosshead, and must have been over 3 inches long. It's where you drive that matters.
