Totally, it’s all about inflating egos and snobbery and fortunately all that nonsense is fading away with the generation that nurtured it.

Agreed. Same reason that some will spend £15k on a watch that does exactly the same thing as a £30 one smile

I am not sure about the inflating ego and snobbery bit. I own a Ferrari and am a member of the owners club. Most of the guys in the club, but not all of them, are like me F1 fanatics and attracted to Ferrari because of its F1 and le Mans history and its engineering. The latter is less of an attraction these days - engines from BMW , Audi, and even Chevrolet are just as "exotic" as Ferrari but that did not use to be the case. But in the club I see little evidence of snobbery / ego except perhaps at the younger end of people who have "made it", and most of these either go for Porsche or it they can afford it Lambo. The ethos in the Ferrari club is similar to that in Club Lotus and maybe Morgan.
