I'll just add my experience, just for general information purposes.
I bought my roadster MK1 in 2004. It had a central radiator mount via a rubber cotton reel (an exhaust mount ). It regularly ripped the rubber in half as there was so much movement of the rad. I discussed a solid mounting with the dealer so we fitted something tougher whereupon it ripped off the ledge which was "welded" to the rad. I glued it back together with liquid metal glue and fixed fireproof heavy foam down each side of the radiator. This stopped the movement and also improved airflow through the radiator. It never gave me trouble again.
My point is, I suppose, that there is likely a huge amount of movement of the rad when the car is on the road, a severe test of a weld or joint if it's all focussed on one small area.
