When I was running the Vincent outfit from the 60's to the 90's I used to use a product available in the UK called "Linklyfe" which was a graphite loaded grease that came in a large round flat tin.
I do not know if anything like this is available in the States.
The chain had to be taken off the machine and washed in petrol to remove any old grease, grit and dirt and then alowed to dry. The chain was then coiled up and laid on top of the linklyfe in the tin and placed on the cooker at a low heat (usually when the missus was out) and the chain would settle into the grease and you could see all the air bubbles comming out as the grease ran into all the links and rollers.
When no more air was seen to be comming out, the chain was taken out of the liquid grease and allowed to cool before fitting it back on the bike.
This was usually done about every 1000 miles.
