A rubber
wrench or a bit of sisal rope will do it. Failing that a large screwdriver ti pierce the can with and provide leverage.
There is special tool which has a loop of cycle chain coupled to a wrench / socket. I use one of these and its good for removing even the most stubborn of filters.
The screwdriver used to do it for me, although I did replace it with Moggo's suggestion having got fed up with being covered in oil. It worked a treat.
