here is my 2 pence worth, i see many have suggested Selenoid, but i think they may be wrong and your RAC man wrong too, a clicking generally means power OK to selenoid Thats the Plate in it swiching over to contact, Starter sounds Jammed, if the car started second time around its more than lightly because the starter has been turned, the Flywheel can come to rest in three different places and leave the starter in a different position, therefore a good connection can be made intermitently, may i suggest (if possible) you get some one to turn the key to crank, and hold it if the starter doesnt start cranking the engine, get the shaft of a hammer (wood) and tap the body of the starter, if she fires the car up, id plumb for recon starter, but they would overhaul Selenoid with it any way.
