Has anyone of you considered to install a thermometer to measure the oil temperature? When yes, what were your measurements and how does look the instrument and where you placed the sensor? Or is the engine thermal fit? I heard in a video, that there is a prevention in the electronic engine management to prevent an overheating.

Hallo Achim,

There's bound to be an aftermarket Oil temp gauge available that'll fit the S&S Engine, check with Motorcycle Zubehör Companies such as W&W in Germany coffee

I doubt that this will be necessary given the volume of oil to circulate. If the engine gets too hot it goes into skip fire mod where it only fire on one cylinder. The only I've his has happened to me was when stuck in traffic at Lemans having ]come off theexited the track.

If the cars moving the engine seems to have sufficient cooling.

'having come off the track' would read better as 'having exited the circuit'!!! wink

The problem is not the oil temperature, but poor oil circulation at tick-over. At a standstill the air cooling is poor. This combined with less oil pressure which effectively stops the cooling oil spray on the underside of the pistons, leads to overheating. In theory, one solution could be to install an additional electric oil pump to ensure good oil pressure at all times.

Interesting you should ask this question now, as I have just fitted a digital thermometer to my M3W. I haven't done a long run yet, but just been up the road to determine that I get a reading.

What I have done is to use a standard cheap indoor/outdoor thermometer, and place the head of the instrument behind the wheel, dead ahead, held by velcro, and led the 'outside' bulb through the dash and into the void under the cowl, and strapped it onto the underside of the tank with a length of tiewrap. I figured that I didn't want the exact temp. all the time, but an approximation so that I could see if it was going up or down. In fact, I suspect it will be pretty accurate, certainly good enough for what I want.

There, go and do it, it's easy and cheap, but, as Harald says, it still may not save the engine at tickover, if it is all about oil pressure at tickover.

I would be very, very surprised if S&S have designed this motor with insufficient oil pressure under any circumstances.

and what about the time to heat up the cold engine after Start, are there some experiences? I will get mine in march 2013 and them there will be some icy weather and maybe snow smile

It seems to me that a cold engine will need at least 20k to heat up to operating temperature before it can be used hard, 10k - 15k would be the minimum.

I don´t know if any Forum members watch Orange County Choppers on TV but they use ONLY S&S engines on their builds.

More than builds, the bikes are works of art!! So I think people who have the new M3W have very little to worry about as far as their engine is concerned! These OCC guys use only the very best available.
