Is a watch jewellery? Makes wearing one sound rather effete if so....

It's obviously a widepread affliction. I much prefer collecting empty wine bottles.

Possibly not flash enough for the male jewellery lovers on the forum Richard, but like you I rather have a hankering for one.....well found! Pic lifted from dingemans website - this one caught my eye, I have considered making a watch myself ( well the case, not the mov't) sold my grandfathers Myford Lathe last week but I still have his pre-war Drummond Round bed

Not sure where translation comes into this, but which marketing genius came up with the idea of calling such a beautiful watch an Hobnail?
The real name is "Clous de Paris", which souds a little bit classier. It's a very traditionnal guilloché-work.

They are rather interesting! But I think I'll stay with the wood variety...

If you like interesting watches, do some research into Vostok... Russian made, can still be picked up for a very reasonable sum and yet are automatic and in-house movement. Don't be confused by the modern fashion brand, sold under the same name using a licensing agreement. The Amphibia has some great history behind it: http://www.webwatchworld.com/vostok-amphibia/If anyone gets tempted, I have a reliable seller in Russia, who buys direct from the factory. You can peruse his wares on eBay but buy direct via PayPal. The bracelets are poor (functional but cheap feeling); however, put onto a vintage leather strap and they punch well above their price point and are easy to maintain and service. Neil, if you use the search function on here and use: 'watches', there is a great thread from a few years back where we spoke about watch collections. I am a big fan of 60s and 70s Omega and whilst I have some modern watches, vintage is my real passion. 1970 Speedmaster MkIII in pilot case and a very poor photo of a rare 1970 Seamaster 200m, so called 'Banana Dial' Those are a couple of vintage shots I had to hand - there are more interesting pieces but I personally think they give a good impression of how Omega were ahead of their time (no pun). As for interesting, small production, watches, another favourite of mine is Dornbleuth ( http://www.dornblueth.com/) - buying one is similar to having a Morgan built at the factory; direct contact with the people making the watch and levels of customisation not available elsewhere.

Some illustrations about the amphibia (here with the "ministry" case) "De manufacture", cheap and reliable (if you pick the good one, the Russian quality control has some weakness...) A genuine spetsnaz watch: I confirm their original steel bracelet is made from recycled crab tin cans... Less Russian and more Italian, a 177 (here with a galuchat strap from Canotage and buckle from 8Artisan)

They are rather interesting! But I think I'll stay with the wood variety... You need the Bremont Victory watch then Graham......... " Bremont Watch Company is delighted to be working with The National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth) to create a limited edition watch unlike any other watch ever created. Each mechanical retrograde watch will be made with original parts of HMS Victory built into it. This beautiful and incredibly unique timepiece will be launched in the summer of 2012, with release planned for later this same year." Wood?
