I still have to get over to the Continent to try some of those passes. There was a possibility of next year, but swmbo wants to do lots of things in the garden, so next year will be the odd day trip out, but no overnights anywhere...

Graham
Hire a gardener, then get the ferry to Santander. From there you can either: turn right and explore the Picos, or; turn left and go to the Pyrennes.
You can then use the line to swmbo of "We won't have to drive too far, the mountains are close to where you get off the ferry"

But be warned and don't make the mistake I made with the lovely Lady Budster love
Picture the scene!

Middle of the night, ferry somewhere off the Brittany coast, rather rough. The LLB had got up to use the bathroom and was bouncing off the walls of the cabin, as the ship rolled.

Me "It's alright darling, just lie down on your bunk and you won't feel the movement of the ship, as much"

LLB "But what if it sinks? Have you seen how rough the sea is"

Me "Don't worry" I said, still half asleep.
"This ferry is over 40,000 tonnes. That's as big as the Titanic"

With hindsight, not the best thing to say!!

swmbo hates travelling on anything that floats on water.
At present, she won't ride in the Mog either...

Cheers,

Alis was actually involved in a ferry disaster she spent 2 hours in the water before being picked up by a fishing boat. A young crewmember dived in the sea, Force 7 at the time, to rescue her and several people. Alis met him after 40 years at a commemoration ceremony. It was a pretty emotional meeting.

She was 14 at the time and one would have to say it has left its mark on her. None the less she will still take a ferry.

The following are in Italian naturally, but google translator would give you the general idea.
