OK thanks for the precision. I thought that the ride height was the same between Suplex and Spax. It's a pitty that the problem has not already been fixed, more than a year after the launch of the car. We know that relations with the suppliers are sometimes complex and that the constructor does not always do what he wants... But, yes, then it's the customers who have the problems. Hope that the Suplex solution will work fine, at least there will be a possibility to cure this problem.

Yes in an ideal world you would swap all 4 but next time you remove the boot liner have a close look at the rear shocker lower mounting bolts. To get them out you would have to first remove the fuel tanks or drop the swing arm off! Dont fancy either if I'm honest.

I have seen this sort of deflection(towards toe in)too, when standing as you describe. This means that actual wheel alignment becomes very dependent on the weights of passenger and driver ! My hand book says toe out 4mm (2mm per wheel) but with two substantial people on board this could actually be toe in !! To avoid the transfer from toe out to toe in when a wheel hits a bump I have tried to achieve near parallel unloaded. I am not that heavy, neither is the wife so when loaded would be slightly toe in. At least any deflection then does not cross from toe out to toe in and should be less of an issue. Also have noted tyre wear on the inside which would indicate xs toe out and tyre is scrubbing. Have done 6000km
I feel this has improved the straight line stabilty but not totally convinced yet.

Hmm, I haven't looked at car since your post, but was wondering if car was jacked up and top bolts then removed ,would the swinging arm then drop down far enough to access lower bolts from below the tanks ?

Not sure, but you would have to disconnect the flexible brake hose and hand brake cable.

I was told the Spax shocks were the solution to the bumpsteer and that my car was much improved over earlier ones. Didn't quite believe it!
Certainly has bumpsteer and very high levels of kickback that can be alarming and the steering arms bonk the exhaust on certain bigger bumps which is also exacerbated (I think) by the higher ride height.
Looking forward to an improved situation for all of this, but still rather enjoying driving the car for all its funny ways.

Bump steer is not a shock absorber issue, but a suspension geometry one. While I can see that better or worse shock absorbing would affect the level of this, but unlike a hole in the road in the road, bump steer is a largely preventable phenomenon.

So, let's look at what could be done. We know that the height of the steerin rack is compromised by the bellhousing, and given that MMC have chosen to place the rack behind the engine, this cannot be lowered in height. I understand that using large narrow wheels does not help either.
As I understand it, the track rod ends really need to be horizontally parralel to the ground and the suspension arms, it is either a matter of raising the steering arms on the upright, a production mod, or fabricating a spacer between the track rod end and its' fixing on the arm. This is what I understand Williams are working on.
The only other thing to do is to lower the ride height of the car, by moving the spring seat or having shorter but stiffer springs, possibly not to difficult to do, if some adjustable platforms can be fitted to the dampers. This may also change the geometry of the front end too, certainly the toe can be reset.
Other than that, I cannot see that the design can be modified any further, and playing around with shock absorbers and spring rates is more a means of masking the inherant problems with the setup that MMC are forced to use by the layout of the front end.
Having said that, when Autocar magazine tested the car last year, they praised the steering very highly, and there was no mention of the current problems, so, it would be interesting to know why that car was different to the current production cars?

For what it's worth, I agree with placing the rack behind the engine as it's not very pretty and engines look much nicer!
