The other day I managed to tread chewing gum into the hall carpet (yes, it was me. A shoe inspection had me bang-to-rights). wasn't best pleased so I thought I'd better do some investigating to find out how to remove it. A trawl of the internet found WD40 came out as a recommendation as it has properties to dissolve sticky-stuff (technical term). " Squirt a liberal amount" (it said) " onto the carpet and rub with a paper towel. It may take a few attempts, but it works. " Somewhat sceptical I was definitely scared of making the suggestion to who, surprisingly, agreed to give it a try. Even more surprisingly it worked a treat! I never thought WD40 would save my bacon!

I believe it is mainly fish oil, still surprising even when you know that.

That sounds like a Wrigley situation that you had to chew on for the answer

I've been interested to read about wd40 on this forum a few times lately. It usually gets a bad name, people claiming it actively encourages moisture etc. The fish oil story is an internet myth. It's petrol based and repels moisture brilliantly. Ive used it on tools left in sheds for years and no rust where I've used it. It doesn't affect wood so can be used where metal meets wood (unlike oil), sprayed into material, for instance where steel pins have a cloth bushing, it lubricates forever, frees rusted joints by creeping in......so where does the bad info come from? I say all this from personal experience and I have, of course, no connection with the firm apart from having bought gallons of it over many years. Incidentally, I've tried lots of cheaper alternatives and none have worked so well. Wow, they should pay me for this advert......but really, has anyone actually been disappointed by it? Nick

I wonder if the fish oil bit is a myth - out in vancouver, they spray their fish lures with wd40 and swear it makes them more attractive to salmon

It's like they say......If you can't fix it with a hammer and/or WD40, then its broke.

Not quite fair Mike. If nothing else is available it helps. But it is true to say that there are now better release oils available.
