OK, just turned 1000 miles on my 2013. What is bump steer please?

David, when you drive along a bumpy road (I particularly notice it on a road that has had lots of crossings dug) the wheel wants to jump from your grasp. Therefore the bumps in the road are trying to make you steer away from the more, or less straight line you intend to follow.

I found a Gunson Trackright on ebay, you just lay it on the ground in front of a wheel, drive or push the car over it, and the little pointer tells you the answer. Easy.

I fitted my damper by bolting a couple of small metal plates with bolt holes, inside the end of the cross brace behind the engine, this supports one end of the damper, the other end was clamped to the track rod end, using a spherical bearing to accomodate movement. When fitted, it doesn't make the the steering any heavier and I ran it for around 500 miles with no problems, but no improvement either, so took it off again.

I thought it would be a good idea to bring this thread back to the top again, in the hope that Redneck, the OP has had a chance to fit and analyse the steering damper idea.

A steering damper isn't the solution to cure bump steer caused by incorrect steering geometry it would at the very best put a "band-aid" on the problem. The factory and other people are working on the problem, there will be some form of retrofit.

I totally agree with Pat, although last weekend I was so fed up with the massive bump steer I re-set the front tracking to straight ahed unladen this should give some slight toe in when I get in, and immediately the steering was transformed. Still unacceptable but much more drivable and feels less dangerous.

Something that's occurred to me, a four wheeled car has some 'keep going straight' input from the rear, so all other things being equal, I'd think a four wheeled version of the three wheelers would have a less bump steer effect even though the front was behaving exactly the same.

Doesn't excuse of course, but may offer a partial explanation.

I received my manual in the mail and found the toe spec is listed right in it!

I changed the toe to "0" and have noticed a significant improvement in the bump steer.

I've purchased a damper but have not had time to sort out the mounting set up yet
