Dear Gambalunga: what do you mean with the "euro Rating is important"? I think the laws about this mattern in Spain and Italy are similar, and I am thinking to buy a car from 1999 (as you can see in the welcome forum) Thanks from Spain P.

It is to do with European Automotive Emission Standards http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standardsWhere I live in Italy petrol cars that are not rated, or diesel Euro 3 or less and without exhaust particle filters, can be banned from circulation at certain times. All the above are prohibited from entering the centre of Milan at any time unless they have special permission, and, on days of high pollution, usually in winter, vehicles with higher ratings may be banned, even in provincial towns. Few other countries seem to have such stringent rules.

Peter, is Euro 3 petrol acceptable everywhere in Italy? Or any restrictions?
My 2004-built 4/4 is Euro 3 I believe.
Thanks Nigel

Euro 3 petrol is ok at the moment but I always worry about future changes in regulations.
At the moment I think Euro 1 may be banned in Rome and all vehicles have to pay a toll to enter the centre of Milan I think Euro 1 and 2 pay more. Pre Euro rated vehicles (known as Euro 0) are banned as are diesel Euro 1, 2 e 3 . On days of high polution Euro 1 and 2 petrol may be banned and diesel without particle filters is now a problem.

How does it affect tourists Peter? I assume that the authorities have no way of knowing if your car is compliant or not if not Italian registered. And historic car events such as the Mile Miglia.....do they have special dispensation?

Comming soon to a city near you.... Clean UK Cities Boris has already made noises about banning old diesel engined vehicles from London.

Why, as a visitor, would I want to take my car into rome or milan? I have memories of driving in naples 30 years ago and I cant imagine its got better!

And historic car events such as the Mile Miglia.....do they have special dispensation? I often ask myself that very question. When particular restrictions are in force, such as periods of high polution, visitors would not even know about them. As for the Mile Miglia, it is possible that they don't pass through restricted areas but even if they did any event involving historic vehicles would have exemptions.
