It's probably true that in general the later the car, the better it is. But earlier cars will be a bit cheaper.

There have been lots of little and some bigger changes, but overall the car is much the same. If you need more legroom you need the later pedal box but even then the car may require modification to maximise legroom.

Most but not all changes can be retro-added and many of these are not provided without the owner paying. But earlier cars will be cheaper, and all will be low mileage.

I'd go for whatever you like the look of! Mine is an October 2012 car and I've got the later steering rack, but the earlier pedal box (M3W in it). I would like the later rear sprocket and hub assembly for various reasons, but personally prefer the earlier location of the gearlever. The frame is bolted to the chassis better on later cars.

If you can, take a look and try the differences. All are HUGE fun, but be prepared to be an 'interested' owner (which I love), and have a good look round the car with a glass of wine every week or two and enjoy.

I don't know about earlier cars being cheaper. There is simply too much demand, not enough units and copious amounts of drool envy. I have put over 6,000 miles on this since last December and it looks great, many of the issues have been addressed and done under warrantee and all other little niggly details have been done. I have no doubt in my mind that I could sell it at what I paid for it as most everyone I know who is interested are not willing to wait. This is the ultimate impulse buy and waiting 6 months to a year and a half is simply not acceptable to someone with the cash and wants it NOW!

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

I don't doubt the drool envy, but there are quite a few M3Ws sitting on dealer lots, unfortunately. I've been watching the price drop on two 2012s in West Palm Beach for the last 10 months. There are also some 2013s in Michigan.

The curious thing, though, is that they are all priced in the same $53-57K range, so model year doesn't seem to affect price.

I really wanted to get a first year vehicle as I plan on keeping this for the long haul and handing it down one day to future generations of family to enjoy. And I figured that over time, the older the vehicle would retain slightly more value seeing as how nothing drastic is different between them and as of now they are similarly priced.

If that is less of an issue for you I would say the newer the build date the more time the builders have had to practice and you will have the latest versions of all of the components.

I've got a 2012 model and have tried the latest cars too - it was very hard to spot the difference. Pedal box has changed but I have a steering wheel spacer to on my car to give more leg/steering wheel room, the steering kickback is actually better on my car than either of the more recent cars I've driven. Overall the way the cars drive and the noises they make don't seem to be any different. Whichever one you go for it will put a smile on your face and you will get a fantastic reaction from other people wherever you go!

Those 2013s in Michigan aren't actual dealer inventory.

Good to know - thanks.

I just learned that West Palm now has a 2013 Superdry in stock as well.
