Hi,

I am half way through adding a plastic trailer mudguard under the boot area of my M3W as described elsewhere in this forum, front end attached fine to the ally stub mudguard - can someone who has done this please described how they secured the back end , I am concerned it could sway about if unsecured !

I used ally bar bent accordingly. Should have taken pics!

Someone screwed the brackets to the wooden frame but I think right down to the axle is best.

I simply screwed through the mudguard into the bottom wooden frame , it's been fine .

It took a few goes to get the height right to clear the boot liner , also don't forget the wheel isnt in the middle .

I used a flat stainless steel bar across the back, screwed into the wooden frame either side, with one single bolt through the guard. search back through the gallery for my pictures, early last year. It's an easy job, that makes a huge difference to keeping the back clean.

When you remove the plastic boot floor , you get this view - you can just about spot the small aluminium gaurd the factory fits in front of the tyre ( pathetic ! )


Seeing this you understand why this mod is required ! I had only done about 50 miles from new, and all this compartment was thick with mud etc.

Like the pioneers before me, I am goign to fit the new guard using the bolts holding the factory guard on. With the factory guard removed ( two half inch bolts ) , you see this :


I have put the bolts back in to show there are two unthreaded holes immediately above the threaded holes - in doing a trial fitting early on I nearly shat myself when I put a bolt into one of these holes accidentaly , thinking the nut was not captive and had disappeared into the box section. No emoticon for that. After a few deep breaths I found the proper holes.

thanks Paul , I will do similar though my scrap bin doesnt run to stainless !
