Not sure we can make a deal, but your speedo gear makes me react. I am making a swap to 5-speed box on my 1975 +8. My only concern at this point is where to source the correct speedo gear.
I was wondering whether you can guide me in a direction where somebody can help me, please.
Thanking you in advance.

I did the same conversion on my 1976 Plus 8 many years ago.

From memory, there were two types of speedo gear fitted to the LT77 gearbox (I will have the details somewhere); the number of teeth are different.

I had my speedo dial recalibrated by Speedy Cables who also supplied me with a new drive cable as the fittings are different to a P6 four speed gearbox.

Let me know if you want any other information.

Question for Dix and David I am thinking of changing my 4 speed gearbox in my 1974 +8 for a 5 speed and was wondering which gearbox you used or are using I’m assuming its a LT77

My question is, is it reasonably easy to do and was it worth doing in the end? i.e. are you happy with it.

Thanks Steve.

Steve, It'll be easier for me to guide you by phone or Skype if you're overseas. I did the work using some advice from another owner who'd done the same change. Send me a private message if you want to pick my brains. It's not too difficult if you're ok with removing the engine and gearbox. Was it worth it? For me yes as I was competing and the 4 speeder is weaker than the LT77. 5th is handy for road use though not for competition.
