Hi dears, i'm trying to remove engine from my 4/4 1971, is there any chance to get off without disassemble gearbox, only unbolt gearbox and pulling forward engine to get it off from downside? I wait your comments! Ciao

My car is a similar age to yours and I have taken the engine out a few times.
You can get it out without taking the gearbox out with it, but you have to take the fan off the front and taking the water pump off gives you an extra few inches wiggle-room! You do need a proper engine hoist as it is heavy and needs to be angled slightly to get it out. You do not need to take the cowl off, but it does make it slightly easier to get the engine out and then put back.

If the Engine is to have the Cylinder Head removed, why not consider removing the head first, place some studs into the Engine Block near the front, usually between No 1 and 2 Piston this will allow the front of the Engine to tip upwards once it is released from the bellhousing allowing for a better escape. x flow heads are easy on and off jobs.

I removed the engine without the water pump and fan, but now it's difficult to get the engine on and fit the transmission!
