Crowbar the boot lid is going to act like an air brake. Suggest you fit a restraint so it cannot open up fully.

The car has 1400 miles, the sound really seems to emanate from behind the seats...my impression is that compensator issues should emanate more forward...

The sound really *seems* to emanate from behind the seats - not up front at the compensator...but perhaps it's just traveling down the transmission tunnel and exiting out the back.

Can anyone who has had a compensator failure tell me where the sound emanated from while driving?

Interestingly, the sound is absent when the car isn't moving.

Are you sure it not a loose bolt, it might be worth removing the seats to check the bolts are tight.

Mine sounded like a bag of nails moving or not. In fact it drowned out the engine eventually.

MMmmm well if it was the Compensator you would hear it clearly from the front of the car - not the rear:((

The sound would be there when the car is stationery too.

Check all nuts/fixings etc - am sure that u already have!

This is something in the drivetrain, because it stops when the clutch is applied - which is why I don't think this is simply a loose bolt on the frame or chassis.

I don't think it's the compensator, as it's not coming from the front of the car, and it's absent when the car is running but stationary.

I need to take the car apart and drive it a little to localize the part...

Do the steps i did,when changing the bevel box oil..look around,move things,it might be a loose bolt or washer around/under the belt

When my compensator was beginning to pack up the noise was "definitely" from the front right suspension and only when going over bumps and it wasn't just me that thought this. As it got worse it reached a point when it was rattling even when stationary in neutral at idle which confirmed the diagnosis. I wouldn't discount a failing compensator just yet.
The way that mechanical noises can seem to migrate around the car, presumably due to assorted resonances is both impressive and a bit maddening.

Definitely the compensator. Mine sounded just like that.
With the clutch depressed the compensator is doing even less work so that may be why the noise disappears. Do you hand blue black grease visible in the bell housing cut out under the steering rack? if so it's the compensator seals.
