My friend has a 1996 4/4 with the 1800 Zetec and is having problems with the engine. It starts and runs, but badly. Engine surges and dies and occasionally misses. He has changed the leads and plugs etc, but no change and now would like to get it diagnostic tested. The connection on the car is the old 3 pin diagnostic head but has not been able to find a garage with this connection. The car is in Northern Ireland so not handy to a dealer, are these diagnostic connectors available on the mainland. The Connaught green car waiting for the Strangford Ferry is the very beauty.  Any help gratefully received Dave

Connectors should be freely available on the likes of eBay I would have thought? Have you tried your local Ford dealer assuming it's a Ford item but knowing Morgan ............. Worth a call to the factory maybe ?

Graham,
We are very interested in that Gunson Code reader but can't tell from the pictures if the connector is round in shape and has a triangle bit in the middle. Have you a picture of your one.

Sorry, no photo.
The 3 pin connector is triangular with a rectangle below the triangle.
The '5' pin connector contains only 3 pins, the body is more oval with a flat base - two pins in the base area, one at the rounded top, with two holes in the middle area for extra pins.
Both connector types are on my car too, so I could connect to either...

I had a very similar problem with a 2004 zetec 4/4 , misfire ,engine stalling, had it checked at a ford dealership but nothing showed on the diagnostics as it was an intermitant problem,it turned out to be a faulty fuel pump relay!

That is a good call. I always now carry a spare relay which can be used either for the fuel pump, or the cooling fan; having had one fail in the past. Also, very easy to check.

Have a look for signs of burning around the coil pack towers (where the HT leads connect) another well known Ford weak point. Copy parts available on eBay and I know of 3 cars who have used these cheaper replacements for years. Ford altered the spark plug gap as high mileage and wide plug gaps increase coil output KV's and this overheats the coil pack leading to failur.

Hi, i have a zetec in my 1991 4/4. The fuel pump is next to petrol tank. I had similar problem found a loose connection.
Might just be as simple as that.
