This was based on engineering assumptions that screwed up engine making for decades.

The RAC formula, to simplify down to the above formula, made three assumptions which do not change, whatever the engine under consideration:

(1). Mechanical efficiency is 75% max

(2). The mean effective pressure is 90lb/sq.in max

(3). The mean piston speed is 1,000 ft/min max, i.e. 2 x L x N = 1000 ft/min

This meant that British engines were long stroke and small bore.
After the war these assumptions were nonsense but habits, will to change and money to build new engines meant engines were a bodge till after the sixties.

As I understand it later this year we will not need to display anyway. Mine flew off while at the factory on test! I'm not bothering to replace. But one of these might be fun?

Keep your first/last tax disc, photocopy it & display the copy. The original will be valuable one day & any new owner would likely value it when you get too stiff to get in & have to sell.

I still think that the dealers should get onto this, and do a Morgan disc which resembles a tax disc. It could show the model, and leave space to show MOT expiry as a reminder (for example).

However I'm also thinking about a tax disc from the year I was born, or maybe the month & year I passed my test, or the month & year of first registration of the Morgans. Still pondering.

I want something in that holder.

It has to be said though, I think the DVLC has made at least two mistakes over the tax disc changes. Displaying a current disc does remind both the driver, and folk on the street. Cancelling a tax disc the moment a car is sold is also not very sensible.

While they've been up front with the changes, I think the issue of cancellation could get changed at short notice as it's an obvious ploy to be awkward and make them money since a car will be taxed twice for the month it is sold - or the new owner is fined. I foresee a few angry letters from those with fines to MPs.

It is interesting just how old some designs were. One might think BL stuck with things, but the AC light six engine (the Weller engine) was designed in 1919, and remained in production till 1963!

The Ford cross-flow engine while a decent bore and stroke ratio quite obviously comes from the same stable as the pre WW2 E93a engine as fitted to F types. And while there are problems with some aspects, crossflows have been inserted in more than one F type!

If the tax is cancelled as soon as the car s sold does this mean you cannot drive it home even if you have insurance without contacting DVLC? I doubt you would be able to do it online from your phone as the system would not have your details. How are Wheeler Dealer on Discovery going to be able to legally drive their project cars back to the workshop?

To be fair the tax should at least run to the end of the current month. Its another sneaky way of getting more money out of motorists.
