There is a new driving licence checking facility for holders of a UK licence. You can check the groups you are entitled to drive and any points.

UK driving licence
You will need both your driver number and your national insurance number. (Tip for NI number - look at a payslip or a tax return).

I think they'll use the fact this is in beta testing to cover up errors but if you live in the UK, have a full car licence with the driving test passed before 19 January 2013 any renewal of your licence should also show group A with note 79 (or to restricted to tricycles; same thing).

I tried tonight and according to them, I don't have it, so could only drive my Morgan in the UK under the derogation. I got somebody else to try who passed his test in 2010, and he gets the correct answer.

My UK licence therefore could lead to an arrest in France etc. I've left a valid email address and invited them to contact me, so I'll see if there is any comeback.

But I'd be extremely interested if any reader is in the same boat as me. Namely, passed UK car driving test prior to 19 January 2013 and does not have a motor cycle test pass. I may get this followed up, but I do need to know about the affected group - or is it just me?

Hi Martin, I have held a full licence for 40+ years, end date of my licence is
15 Mar 2023, like you my entry does not show class A as a full licence.
Rather it shows class A as provisional.
I hope that helps.

I had thought that although I had not passed a motorcycle test that I 'had' a full licence for that class of vehicle.

I don't have a full bike license passed my test in 86

But the details shown are correct.

IE it shows my correct entitlements.

you never did get group A as a full entitlement just because you passed your car test.

It would appear that you are not legally allowed to drive a three wheeler here without a full bike license either

Same here, all present and correct. Did you notice the example licence number?

The Italians did not have a specific licence classification bikes if you had a car licence prior to the provisions of the EU. The Swiss police have been targeting Italian motorcyclists recently and impounding the bikes if the licence has not been updated to show class A.

It is a bit nasty as they know perfectly well what the Italian entitlements are for the older licence holders.

I didn't bother about provisionals as for the most part, a full licence for one group is automatically a provisional for the others if there are no additional requirements; age for example.

It sounds however as though you are in the same boat as me and your details don't return the correct result.

Worth noting, they do mostly log the correct start date so should get it right. (Mine is a month out, but as it is in the 70s, I'm not worrying).

A car test pass never did give a motorcycle licence but a pre-test licence might have covered it. But I think I'm correct in saying all holders of pre-test licences are now dead.

The Telegraph article is over a year old. Since then, the UK has implemented the derogation allowed under the third European Driving Licence Directive and if you have passed a car test, and if you are 21 or older, you can drive a trike.

I would presume this is done with no change to the licence as the age is there, so the police would be able to see if you were allowed to drive trikes.

But my point is your licence would not be correct in other EU countries, so needs to show group A limited to trikes etc.

Seven page thread on the topic here as I spotted the issue before it took place.
