I put a K&N air filter on to my 1.6 sigma engine (2009) and I ran a hose out of the bottom of the air filter housing to a cold air scoop bought on Demon Tweaks - Total cost c. £40 sterling. Cain put me on to the plan. I noticed a good difference on take-off and top end torque. Worth a try! G

I have bought a sports exhaust so hope if the engine exhausts and breathes a bit better I may get some lower rev torque.

Has anyone fitted an after market air filter (Pipercross etc) in standard filter housing and noticed any improvement?

Sounds interesting. Any pictures? G

Fresh air is taken underneath the radiator through a funnel and some piping.

I've fitted the Rapide Engineering Airfilter System and a full librands sport exhaust to my 4/4 with Sigma engine. Now the engine revs much easier and the tourque is earlier there. At last, the sound is much better.

Another Sigma intake- not sure who first posted this, but I think it was a very high quality DIY job. Gerry.

thumbs having investigated the same for the MR2 hill climb car, the best way is to take a heat insulated pipe from the throttle body and get it to where clean colder air is forced into it. I looked at the Morgan and if you have enough room between cowl and radiator then something like a large plastic floor attachment from say a Henry Hoover could be fitted as an air scoop. I would heat shield the underneath of the cowl above the radiator. Then fit an in line air filter further back, there are loads available.

Forced air induction if done right should return about 3-5% power increase.

According to the engineers at Omex a "sports" air filter by itself will make absolutely no difference. It will probably give you more induction noise that will make you think you are getting better performance. Getting cold air, instead of hot under-bonnet air, intake will make a slight difference. Note that the current Plus 4 GDI has a cold air intake the leads over the radiator.

If you want a real boost you need throttle bodies. It depends very much on your driving style. You may even loose a little torque at low revs but it will make a big difference if you are prepared to keep the revs up.

In the end, as the yanks say, you can't beat cubes: in other words a bigger engine. A saying not entirely true and particularly in these days of turbo charged engines, but it still has some validity.

Absolutely agree with you. The Throttle Bodies are great fun - but the reality is that you have to really drive up at the top end of the tach to get the benefit.

I personally particularly enjoy swapping the cogs and revving the engine= Throttle Bodies.

Throttle Bodies don't really equate to torque - as Gamalunga says displacement and turbo/ super chargers are more relevant if that is your " thing"

Diesels have a lot of torque - Morgan with a diesel???? innocent

Yep......in the end I succumbed to cubes! Increased power with the throttle bodies on my 4/4 didn't equate to decent torque.....as a certain member on here well knows wink and I got tired of having to rev the nuts off it all the time. It did sound glorious though!

Spot on. thumbs

Here's what Donald needs:

Plus get rid of the standard and quite restrictive manifold/exhaust. As long as the car has the 'new' MX5 (and not the 'old' Ford) gearbox then swapping gears at the red line is an absolute pleasure. The sound effects are just an added bonus especially when changing down...
