I'm really saddened that so many people both sides are deploying this kind of argument. The issue shouldn't be about money or short term self interest, but about who we are as a country.

Giles, you chose to live in France that is fine and can take the high ground. At the end of the day it is about money. If Plymouth had the per capita investment that Scotland enjoys today's things would be a lot different for a deprived area. west of Exeter is a forgotten land which is why The Princes Trust has a focus at the moment on Plymouth and Tor Bay. They had to withdraw some of their initiatives from Cornwall and the further west you go the worse it gets. I will gladly drive you around Plymouth and show you why it is about money.....

Well I guess Plymouth would be amongst the biggest beneficiaries of scottish independence as the Nuclear base would almost certainly be moved from Faslane to Devonport.

Should a parting of the ways occur, I don't think you should take it as given that the cash saved on no longer subsidising Scotland would go anywhere other than reducing the deficit.

Politics is always about two things: power and money.

Scotland's politicians seem to feel they have been deprived of both over the last 300 years and so being an independant state would give them both.

Pete is correct, if he South West had the per-capita investment that the UK Government gives to Scotland it would be a very, very different place.

It is all about infrastructure. I live 5 miles from the centre of Salisbury. Salisbury? Surely that can't be a problem area.
The city is OK, if you can get there, but the lack of a bypass means it can take, most days in summer, up to 40 min to cross the city, a distance of 9 miles.

Once you are more than a couple of miles outside modern communications fail: we don't even have 3G mobile phone cover and BT has just put FTC in the village. But go another 2 miles out and they are lucky to get 1.5MB, impossible to run a business.

Wages are rural, it is rare to see a job advertised in the local paper ant much more than £20K pa, yet housing costs are outer commuter level. A 2 bed maisonette is between £200 and £250K. Totally unaffordable for the young.

We don't moan, we just get on and do the best we can.

I see us (England) as the parent trying to appease (Scotland) the child at the check out giving into it by purchasing it sweeties (Bribery) in the vain hope it will stop winging only for it to happen again and again.

Whatever the outcome I wish both sides a lot of luck because the fallout from Mr salmond's folly will be with us for a long time.

That first statement rings very true, it has gone on for a long while - equally so the placebo non existent carrots on sticks.

Twenty odd years ago whilst on business in Stirling I stayed at the King Robert The Bruce Hotel a medium grade place whose claim to fame is the monument of the warrior and of course Bannockburn. The battle where the burn ran with the blood of the English you are cheerily informed during breakfast (well as many times as they can fit in actually).
One swallow comes to mind but never mind.

Coincident with the stay was a meeting of the SNP and quite frankly the conduct left a little to be desired but I guess if you attended Tory or Labour one much the same could be said, after all no matter the rhetoric these are still boys clubs...

I have a few Scottish friends and although quite keen SNP supporters previously I notice of late they are taking another view now based on the character in charge.

As ever time will tell, but there is no way back now from the created furrore I just hope nobody suffers as a result of the posturing.
